Queenstown is located in the South Island of New Zealand (Aotearoa), on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, adjacent to the dramatic Remarkables mountain range. In July the weather is usually stable, crisp and clear, with daytime temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. Although the nearby mountains are covered with snow, the town is generally snow-free.
There is a tremendous range of activities in the Queenstown region, from a walk beside the lake and a leisurely cruise on the steamship TSS Earnslaw to heli-skiing and bungy jumping. The Queenstown Winter Festival, the biggest event of the ski season, takes place the week before the conference.
